ODEN 🍲 Japan’s cosiest winter comfort food
If winter had a flavour in Japan, it would definitely be Oden.
But wait, what exactly is it?
Think of a big simmering pot of clear, savoury broth. Inside: soft daikon, tofu, konnyaku (a jelly-like root vegetable), maybe a surprise or two… all gently bubbling away, soaking up that comforting umami magic. That’s Oden. Simple, soulful, and made to warm you from the inside out.
So where did it come from?
Oden has roots all the way back in the 14th century. It started as something called dengaku: tofu grilled and dipped in miso sauce.
Over the centuries, the Japanese did what they do best: evolved it, shared it, made it their own. Bit by bit, it turned into the warm winter stew we know and love today.
You’ll find it everywhere in Japan during the colder months from tiny street stalls to convenience stores. But no two Oden bowls are quite the same. Every region, every home, every izakaya has its own version.
Oh, and one more thing we only make 10 bowls a day here at Midori.
It’s not just for show, each pot is slow-cooked, with patience and care, to bring out the real flavour.
If you’ve never tried it, now’s the perfect time to meet your new favourite winter dish.
And if you already know it… come get cosy and enjoy it all over again.
ODEN is waiting!
Warm, comforting, and full of history
