Celebrate Spring in the Japanese Way

Fresh Food and Fun Traditions!

With spring in the air, it’s the perfect time to dive into one of Japan’s most beautiful and flavourful seasons!

While sakura often takes the spotlight, there’s much more to discover about Japanese culture and cuisine during spring. From seasonal dishes to centuries-old traditions, this is a time of renewal, connection, and of course, some incredible food! 🌸 ✨

Seasonal Ingredients: Fresh Flavours of Spring
Spring in Japan brings a focus on fresh, vibrant ingredients, many of which are only available during this time of year. These seasonal foods, called shun (旬), are deeply embedded in Japanese culture, where the freshest ingredients are celebrated. Here are a few springtime favourites:

Takenoko (Bamboo Shoots): This spring delicacy is enjoyed in soups, rice dishes, or tempura. The young, tender shoots symbolise renewal and are a must-try during the season.
• Sansai (Mountain Vegetables): Wild plants like fiddle head ferns and butter bur sprouts are foraged in the mountains and bring a fresh, earthy flavour to Japanese dishes.
• Ichigo (Strawberries): Sweet and juicy, strawberries are a popular spring treat, often featured in Japanese desserts like mochi or parfaits.

Hanami: More than Just a Picnic
You’ve probably heard of Hanami, the traditional cherry blossom viewing, but did you know it’s more than just admiring flowers?

Hanami is all about gathering with friends and family under the blooming trees for a festive picnic. People enjoy bento boxes, sometimes even sake, and seasonal treats while celebrating the beauty of the blossoms. It’s the perfect blend of nature, food, and socialising! 🍱 🌸

The word “Hanami” (花見) literally means “flower viewing,” and it’s an age-old tradition that goes back to the Nara period (710–794 AD).
Originally, it was only for the elite, but now it’s a beloved custom for everyone.
And here’s a little-known fact: even if you’re not surrounded by sakura, you can still celebrate the spirit of Hanami. Any spring gathering outdoors with good food and company can carry the essence of this beautiful tradition. As they say in Japan, 花より団子 (hanayori dango) – “Dango over flowers,” meaning people may sometimes prioritise the fun of eating and gathering over just watching the blossoms!

Even on the Gold Coast, you can embrace the spirit of spring with a picnic. With beautiful parks and beach spots, there’s no shortage of scenic places to lay down a blanket and enjoy the outdoors! 🌳 ☀
